“I think for the majority of people, this Switch update is not necessary.

Games will still run just fine, and most will look great.

Internally, there is no change in performance, although storage doubles to 64GB over the current 32GB.

The differences are almost all external.

And, says Nintendo, you could now “enjoy enhanced audio from the systems onboard speakers.”

And if you use it docked, as a home games console hooked up to the TV?

There is only one change that will affect you.

The HDMI output remains the same, at the same video resolution.

With the current version, you only get a USB A port inside the docks flappy door.

For Ethernet, you oughta add a dongle.

Its a shame that Nintendo didnt take the chance to fix its JoyCon controllers, though.

They remain the same, complete with the notorious “drift” problemcaused by cheap components.

A Switch Pro?

Switch fans have long wished for a Switch Pro, a version with 4K video and an upgraded processor.

And perhaps there will never be a Switch Pro.

Not as a simple upgrade to the Switch, at least.

More likely is that the Switch Pro would be a new console entirely.

“It’s highly unlikely Nintendo will release a Switch Pro in the next couple of years.

This upgrade feels like a compromise made necessary because of pandemic work restrictions.

The teams are likely still hard at work on the Switch Pro,” says Costa.

Thats speculation, of course.

But the real pull of Nintendo is the quality of its games.

WouldZelda: Breath of the Wildbe any more enjoyable in 4K?

And the 16-BitSuper Mario World, playable on the Switch as a download, still stands up today.

So as long as Nintendo keeps coming up with these amazing games, we’ll be happy.
