As a workaround, you could copy them to your local machine and edit there.
This would sometimes lead to confusion, lots of overwriting, and cryptic file names.
These features still exist and work well, but SharePoint is more than just a fancy file drive today.
A new file-sharing service called SkyDrive (nowOneDrive) took over simple file sharing.
