Is Xfinity's High-Speed Gig Internet Worth It? Here's My Take

What is gigabit internet?

Cable internet doesn’t boast the same upload speed potential as afiber-optic connection.

Additionally, gig service from Xfinity is pricier than some, and its 10Gbps plan is just too expensive.

It’s worth noting Xfinity’s pricing and service terms will vary by market.

However, if you live in the Northeast region you won’t likely deal with any data restrictions.

Either way, 1.2TB is generally a lot of data.

Suppose you’d rather avoid watching your data usage and potentially paying added fees.

Get your money’s worth out of that 10,000Mbps connection.

According toOpenVault’sfourth quarter 2024 report, the average US household uses downstream speeds of 569Mbps and 32Mbps upstream.

Your household may not even need the fastest speeds, 500Mbps should be enough.

Otherwise, I’ll pass.

Depending on the price of the Gigabit x2 plan, I’d likely pass on 2,000Mbps as well.

On the other hand, standard gigabit service has become much more practical.

A gigabit connection ensures you have plenty of speed to go around.

That said, it’s understandable if you deem speeds of 1,000-1,200Mbpsfaster than your home needs.

How does Xfinity’s gig service compare to other ISPs?

Xfinity’s gig plan is decently priced compared to other providers.

Gigabit Pro is a premium fiber-to-the-home service priced at $300 per month.

This doesn’t even include the looming price increases after your promo period ends.

Xfinity offers a faster gigabit service than most ISPs, including a 1,200Mbps tier.

Simply put, the speeds you could expect will depend on the connection pop in available at your address.

When it comes to speeds, that’s where cable internet falls short.

Though, Xfinity does have a fiber service, offering symmetrical speeds of 10,000Mbs.

However, this much speed might be an overkill for your household.

However, for most markets, you could expect a monthly data cap of 1.2TB.

Going over your monthly data cap means incurring a fee of $10 per 50GB of block data.

In addition, cable providers like Xfinity are notorious for increasing their prices after a year.

So keep that in mind when choosing to sign up for Xfinity’s gigabit service.
