Tested on Android 10,9 and iOS versions 13 and 12 with WhatsApp versions 2.19.360 /2.20.10 respectively.

Scroll down to WhatsApp and verify the toggle switch is set to on (green).
To back up from inside WhatsApp:
TapChats.
Turn onAuto Backupusing the toggle switch.
Go toSettings>Chats>Chat Backup.
TapBackup to Google Drive.
Select a backup frequency.
Select your Google account or create a new one.
You may have to sign in first.
TapBack up overto choose the connection you want to use.
it’s possible for you to also tap theBACK UPbutton to back up on the fly.
Include your phone number in full international format, which is describedhere.
Review the warning, drop your full phone number and tapDelete My Account.
Android Phone
slide in your full phone number and tap the redDelete My Accountbutton.
Here, you also have the option of changing your WhatsApp phone number and deactivation, rather than deletion.
These steps are nearly identical on iPhones and Android phones.
you could now delete the WhatsApp app from your gadget.
